Leisure Suit Larry 1-6 Trivia

Postby Robin » Mon Oct 03, 2005 9:19 am

The remake of the first "Larry" was also politically updated to include references to the first Gulf War. In the original release, Larry had credits cards from Lybia; in the remake, they are from Iraq. Also, in the original game, after buying condoms in the shop, you tell the clerk: "Thanks a lot, big mouth!", while in the remake it becomes "Thanks a lot, Saddam!"

The Russian version of this VGA remake features some changes (although not as many as in the original game). For example, the messages in the bar toilet are different, there is a message concerning Roger Wilco and Vohaul from the Space Quest series, which didn't exist in the original American version.

Leisure Suit Larry 1 was available in four different packages: a 16 color version (supporting EGA, MCGA, VGA, Tandy/PCjr) with either 3.5" DD or 5.25" HD disks, and a 256 color version (supporting MCGA, VGA) with either 3.5" HD or 5.25" HD disks.

Carlos Escobar, one of the artists, made a cameo in this game, but it's a very rare apperance. He only appears if you say something nasty to the maid, since he plays the maid's brother.

As far as I know, LSL3 was Sierra's only SCI0 game to have timing issues, and if you have a processor higher than a Pentium, you'll encounter them if you decide to use the casino's elevator to go up to Patti's apartment, and it doesn't arrive immediately. You'll also encounter these issues if you watch Cherri Tart dance because she doesn't get tired. I assure you that these issues are overcome by setting the game's speed to maximum and waiting 10-15 minutes.

Game creator, Al Lowe, has been known to work himself into all his games. This is no exception, check the corner of the comedy club.

Great Programming Disasters of the Century, part 2 (with part 1 being the Y2K-bug…): In LSL 3, Larry has to build his muscles in the “Fat City” health club by doing some heavy exercise on four stations. Each exercise needs to be repeated several times to be effective. However, the number of repetitions necessary is directly proportional to the clock frequency of your processor. Great idea, guys! Larry 3 was developed on an 16 MHz 386, which resulted in 21 repetitions each. That was quite manageable. Unfortunately, new processors tend to be faster each year. On a decent Pentium 233, Larry has to heave the weights 510 times; take that times four (the different machines) and times two (weight up, weight down), and you come to 4080 keystrokes. This is indeed heavy exercise.
I wonder if anyone has tried this on an Athlon…

The game was intended to be named "Polyester Patty in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals". When Larry encountered the female protagonist for the first time in his second adventure game (See Larry 2), her name was Polyester Patty. It was then changed to Passionate Patty -- the designers obviously realised that the first version for the name had been rather dumb.

Leisure Suit Larry 5 was available in four packages: a 16 color version (supporting EGA, MCGA, VGA, Tandy/PCjr) with either 3.5" DD or 5.25" HD disks, and a 256 color version (supporting MCGA, VGA) with either 3.5" HD or 5.25" HD disks.

You thought product placement would only occur in the movies? Not quite. Sierra might well have been the first company to place an advertisement in a computer game. US-American telephone company Sprint paid to be featured in Leisure Suit Larry 5 -whenever Larry or Patti were making a phone call in the game (which happened quite a few times), the call would end with the line “Thank you for using U.S. Sprint!”- and later in Space Quest 5. See the screenshot section for graphic proof of the advertisement.

Wait a second… Larry 3, Larry 5… where’s the 4th episode? There’s never been one.

The Larry series was originally planned as a trilogy. If you know the ending of Larry 3, you know that it’s well-rounded and final. When designer Al Lowe had finished Larry 3 in 1989, he was somewhat fed up with his creation, and announced that there’d “never be a Larry 4!”

At least not a “normal” adventure game. In 1989, Sierra had ambitious plans to build up an online gaming community. Nobody knew if this would work, but it was clear that it needed a “killer application”; an online adventure game with a score of players working together simultaneously. That’s what Larry 4 was supposed to be. However, the project turned out to be much more complicated than anyone had expected. As Al Lowe describes on Allowe.com:

“After a month or so, we knew we were in trouble. I decided to write a checkers game as a simple test case to see if we could actually move objects and communicate. It worked. But we were still a long way from making characters walk and communicate and interact.

“So I wrote a backgammon game. Then chess. Still we had no system to support all the features needed for an adventure game. But we were having so much fun playing against each other, we decided to push what we had into a real product. It became The Sierra Network. TSN was quite successful in its day, especially considering the small numbers of players who also had modems.

“Eventually, when TSN was losing 10 million dollars per year, Ken [Williams] sold half of it to AT&T for 50 million dollars. I laughingly said Sierra was the only company to make money in on-line gaming: by selling out! Later AT&T would pay another 50 mil for the other half. They then sat on it for about a year before giving up and selling the whole thing to America On-Line for 10 million. AOL announced big plans, but never carried through and the whole thing withered up and died without ever seeing the light of day.”

When Al Lowe finally decided that the Larry series needed to be continued, and started to work on the next off-line episode, he was reluctant to call it Larry 4. Hadn’t he exclaimed that there wouldn’t be a game with that name? He kept his promise. The next adventure was Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does A Little Undercover Work.

But even though the 4th episode does not exist, it has an official name nevertheless: Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Missing Floppies™.

There are actually three versions of this game: the Windows version, which runs in 640x480 256 colours; the regular DOS lo-res version, which runs in 320x200; and a DOS hi-res version, exactly like the Windows version, but running on DOS.

Although the game didn't include EGA graphics support, it is possible to get the DOS floppy disk version of the game to work in EGA mode thanks to Sierra's flexible development system. If you copy the file EGA640.DRV from another of Sierra's point 'n' click adventure games into the directory where Larry 6 is installed, you can then run the install program and select EGA 640x200 16 color graphics (note that you need to use the driver from games which include EGA and MCGA/VGA support in the same package, this trick won't work with the drivers from games that were available in separate packages for 16 and 256 colors. Some games that will work are King's Quest VI and the remake of Police Quest 1). Of course, the 16 color graphics don't look quite as good as the 256 color graphics even though a slightly higher resolution is used, so there isn't much practical application for this trick; even when the game was first released, there weren't many people left who still had EGA cards in their machine which is probably why Sierra didn't bother including the driver with the game.

Jan Rabson, the voice of Larry on Larry 6 cd have dubbed too Larry 7, Larry Casino and Larry Magna Cum Laude (guest).

Here's a few things that will get you killed:

* Go to the kitchen and suck sir from the tire of the roach coach.

* Before pointing the video camera into the ladies shower, enter the security booth and try to take the handcuffs from Daryl's belt.

* Go to the mudbaths, and jump in the mud pool still wearing your leisure suit.

* Go to the health spa and use the zipper on Gary.

* Enter the sauna still wearing your leisure suit.

* Jump in the swimming pool still wearing your leisure suit

* In the bar, open the green door at the back of the room.

* Turn on Dr. Swinebutt's cellulite drainage machine before you fix it.

* When you get Cavarrichi's ID badge, click on her shirt twice with the hand icon.

Here's a few easter eggs as well:

After Cav leaves the aerobics room, click on her record collection and select one of the songs from the Leisure Suit Larry 6 soundtrack.

Use your zipper on the fountain to be awarded a point.

Click the hand icon on various objects in the lobby to advance further into the game.

If you try to take Cavaricchy's top enough times, (keep clicking with the hand icon on it) she'll eventually remove it and show you her breasts (YES!) Unfortunately, her following lines are (and I quote) "Now that you have seen them you must die" (CRAP!). Well at least it's a fun way to go! :)

On 1994 a cd version of the game was released which included full speech, new high-definition VESA graphics and some nice eastern eggs included.

All (but one) of the women in Leisure Suit Larry 6 are named after wines. See if you can figure out the corresponding wine by yourself:

Gammie Boysulay
Charlotte "Char" Donay
Burgundy (Bodine)
Shablee
Cavaricchi "Cav" Vuarnet
Shamara "Sham" Payne
Merilly "Mer" Lowe
Rose Eleeta

[Okay, here's the solution: Gamay Beaujolais (a red wine), Chardonnay (white), Burgundy (that was a hard one, eh? Anyway, a red wine), Chablis (white), Cabernet (red), Champagne, Merlot (red). I have to pass on that last one; it's probably a refernce to rosé wines.
Please take a look at the latest rules, it is essential you follow them. !
